About Leo Lionni:
It was graphic design historian Stephen Heller who best summed up Leo Lionni (1910-1999) as "an unfaltering rationalist, a devout humanist and a passionate artist." Lionni is popularly known for his authorship and illustration of over 40 books written for children, but he began his career in Italy as a fine artist. To escape the rampant Fascism of Italy during the war, in 1939 Leo moved his family to the United States. It was in the US that his work in advertising gained a great momentum, with stints as art director at Fortune Magazine and Time/Life among other major publishers. It was after his return to Italy in 1962, however, that he began work on the juvenile titles that would gain him his greatest fame. His most direct influence through all aspects of his career was the Italian avant garde, particularly the Futurist movement.
