About Alex Steinweiss:
Widely regarded as the inventor of the modern graphic record album sleeve, Alex Steinweiss (1917-2011) began his career in 1939 as the first art director for Columbia Records. For over 40 years he continued in that role, designing some 2,500 covers according to his own count. In addition to Columbia, Steinweiss also designed jackets for RCA, Remington, Decca, and London as well as posters, book covers, magazines, and television screen graphics. Many of Steinweiss' designs can be identified by his signature handwritten typeface, which has become known colloquially as the "Steinweiss Scrawl." Mr. Steinweiss continued to be active in design until his death on July 18, 2011.
