Is it a really big marble? A rolling paperweight? No, it's actually an antique carpet bowl made in Scotland.
Victorian carpet bowls (often mistakenly called carpet balls) were created for a game that became popular in the late 1800's during Queen Victoria's reign.
The object was to position your bowl closest to a small white bowl (called a "jack") while trying to bump/roll the other players' bowls further from the jack. Similar to bocce ball or lawn bowling, but enjoyed indoors on the carpet.
The bowls are fired clay, hand painted with stripes or patterns and glazed. They are also heavy (over 1.5 lbs), you wouldn't want to drop this on your foot!
This bowl is in remarkably good condition, with minor chips. The glaze still shines. It's quite beautiful and sure to spark conversation when on display.
