Even in the days of stark electric light, there must always be room for a little mood lighting and how better to create some sultry art deco ambiance than with this Greco-Roman style candlestick.
Art Deco design is many things to many people drawing influence from many sources and there was a resurgence in the popularity of Greco-Roman design. This candlestick crafted in bakelite uses a elegant ridged column on square plinth and could have been lifted from the Parthenon.
The candlestick has bands of brass and a brass cup an bulb candle holder to the top, still geometric but not as angular as some pieces of the period. It comes apart into sections of plates and tubes which provide a neat way of hiding the pieces' construction. Overall this piece is in fine condition; the bakelite may show signs of fading but barring some tiny, inconsequential nibbles there are no dents or knocks.
We assume this candlestick was once part of a pair or graduated set, however it works as a stand alone piece.
