Here we have another one of our favourite mysteries with this art nouveau style metal and blue glass lidded bon-bon dish.
We have called this a bon-bon dish though it doesn't fit the usual profile of a bon-bon dish. We have said Art Nouveau style as it is, but then again may not be. We have said metal because it may be worn silver-plate or it may be pewter or it may be simply white metal. The date given is Edwardian because it is largely Edwardian in style, though it may be later.
Despite all our research we have not really turned up anything similar. It forms an urn shape with a domed lid and acorn style finial. The main body is a four barred cage and bands on the lid match these bars. All the bars, bands, edging, finial and foot have a rose motif. Inside the cage is an inverted dome in stunning blue glass which has the feel of Bristol Blue, with some bubbles formed as part of the blowing process and an imperfect shape. Combined, these features would indicate an early piece.
The base has a maker's mark of a Y in a flower and a patent number, but we have found no similarities, save one which suggests this may have once been a music box novelty - if it were, the music box has long gone and it is unclear where there would have been room for such a thing.
If you, like us, love a mystery then this is the ideal piece for you. If you love an bit of art nouveau styling then this may also be the perfect idea - it will certainly be a longstanding talking point.
