A beautiul 'combination' embroidered colorful velvet two- piece skirt and top, from the Zapotec culture of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, southen Mexico.
By 'combination', I mean that all the floral embroidery is done by hand ( bordado), and all the geometric embroidery is painstaking done by machine ( costura). The costura work is also very labor-intensive, requires great planning, and is a speciality of the Zapotec towns of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
The entire ensemble ( in Spanish, "huipil" for the blouse, and "falda" for the skirt ; "traje" for the whole outfit) is in wonderful condition, and very wearable.
There is a slight color difference between the top and the bottom pieces, which I have tried to show in the last photograph. The velvet of the skirt is brown, the huipil is somewhat redder.
When worn, it is not at all obvious. In fact , I had a quite difficult time photographing the difference.
( I have not infrequently seen this. Sometimes the huipil wears out and is replaced, other times there is not quite enough of the velvet for both pieces. ).
It is a graphic, colorful and quite beautiful outfiit.
These are often worn with an attached lace ruffle ; These ruffles are made to be basted on , and easily taken off for washing or replacing...they get quite worn after a couple of velas! ( A vela is a party in the Isthmus).
I will include one with the traje.
This outfits are quite versatile:
Wear both pieces with the lace "olan" ...
This is the most elegant option, and from experience, I can say that one feels rather like a queen
wearing this..
Wear the huipil / blouse alone..
always great with skirts or jeans.
Or....wear the skirt ( with or without the lace), with perhaps a silk or lace top, and boots or tights & shoes below. ( I do this often. It can be a great look).
A wonderful thing about ethnic pieces, is that they are beyond fashion. Every couple of years , fashion rediscovers ethnic, and goes wild over it all over again ( this cycle seems to happen more and more quickly!) I.
I have pieces that I have had for many years, that I still treasure and wear.
This very pretty outfit is a large medium to large. But do remember that because the huipil is square, it can easily be taken in. and the waistband, too is a tie that adjusts very readily.
The condition is very good vintage.
The beautiful old trajes are becoming quite difficult do obtain, and they are the ones that I love - and choose to sell.
Huipil
21 inches long
25 iinches wide
Skirt
27 inches long, without the lace
with the lace, about 6 to 8 inches longer, depending on how it is basted or sewn on.
The waistband ties, and so is very adjustable:
About a 32 inch maximum:
again, easy to change.
