Modes & Travaux was (and amazingly still is) a French women’s magazine with lots of great advertising, articles on haute couture, travel, books, cooking, fashion, children, home-making, and all sorts of home crafts (needlework, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, knitting). It commenced publication in 1920 and is still doing so. One or more patterns were included so you could make one of the garments illustrated in the issue, also a pattern for embroidery or something similar, and often a “supplement” with an article about something of interest, an author, etc. It was printed on rather poor quality stock, only one step above newsprint, so these old magazines have flaws, stains, creases, etc. They are an excellent source for vintage fashion illustrations, and for a glimpse into the everyday life of the average homemaker of the period. Of course, it is all in French!
This sale is for 3 magazines. They are in their original envelopes. May is in the worst condition as it has a detached and damaged cover (both front and back) and some pages are loose at the binding and stained, but has patterns and supplements. It has the Chez les Couturiers feature with designs by the designers noted in the title. See first photo on site.
August is the magazine only and has losses to the cover on the right edge, see photo.
April has a damaged corner on the cover, but all of its patterns and supplements are there. The patterns are for a jumper style dress and a blouse. If you need scans of the pattern designs please ask. This group of magazines is in rather poor condition, please look at the photos and ask questions. The interiors are ok, no missing pages.
