This real slate chalkboard is made from a cut-down piece of real slate from an old schoolhouse that was torn down in Latrobe, PA. The outer dimensions of this framed slate chalkboard measures about 23 1/4 x 19" inches. The frame itself is about 2 inches wide.
Real slate is much more heavy duty than something painted with chalkboard paint. It will withstand the test of time and also erases "cleaner" (in my opinion). This particular piece of slate has some naturally occurring marks and character. The fourth photo shows a white speck that might be paint- I'll try to steel wool it off and will make note of it if it comes off.
The frame was made of reclaimed wood so it has some general wear and character. It was sanded, but it has some rough hewn areas and some old layer of paint that add to its rustic look. There may be some old nail holes, knots, and old wear to the wood- nothing that affects its overall soundness though. It is wired and ready to hang horizontally. This item is quite heavy. Just FYI, you may be able to save a bit on shipping if you have the slate chalkboard shipped to a non-residential address (Fedex Ground offers a discount on that).
I have many other slate chalkboards in my shop if you are looking for a different style or size!
