This sweet little book, the Language of Flowers, is a hardcover facsimile of a hand-made scrapbook from 1913. The original book was a golden anniversary gift from a British husband to his wife, beautifully hand written and adorned with sweet watercolor illustrations.
Discovered decades later, the family gave permission for the scrapbook to be reproduced in England in the late 1960s. This is a third edition dated 1973, in beautiful condition - hardcover with dustjacket.
“To Mother,” the author inscribed. “Wishing you many happy returns of the day – from Father,” with the date, August 8th, 1913.
From this book you will learn that Nettle, Burning = Slander and Foxglove = Insincerity, that Wild Tansy means "I declare war against you" and a forget-me-not means true love.
People used to send each other coded messages embedded in the flowers of bouquets - from scandalous propositions to challenges to duels! In a way it was an early version of texting.
Don't send the wrong flowers and blunder into a swordfight - read this book!
